Cross-Cultural Communication: Succeeding in Global Business

The global business economy is upon us, but not every American is comfortable working there. While we are confident in our technical skills, we are often uncomfortable working outside our usual cultural silos. Our international business partners have different skin tones and body coverings. They use accented English.  We frequently need to repeat ourselves on conference calls, and they certainly don’t get our sarcasm. Interculturalist Alan Headbloom takes the dread out of working across borders.  A lifelong culture-crosser, he will demystify the universal tendency to flock with birds just like us and guide participants into new ways of thinking, speaking, and being when working transnationally.  Hands-on and interactive exercises make his presentation fly by, and participants will have time to ask follow-up questions related to their own workplace.

About the Presenter:

Alan Headbloom works with foreign-born professionals in hospitals, universities, and industry, helping them acculturate to American English and American ways (http://headbloom.com/).  Presents on topics of language and cultural diversity, workplace inclusion, and adapting to coworkers from different backgrounds. Has lived on four continents (N. America, Europe, Africa, and S. America) and traveled to six (all but Antarctica). Speaks fluent German, passable Spanish and Portuguese, and enough French, Swedish, and Hausa to get himself into trouble (also studied Farsi, Czech, Japanese, Hmong). Has taught preschool, high school, adult education, and university students, including teaching American theater students how to act with foreign accents. Holds a bachelor’s degree in German (Albion College), a master’s degree in English (University of Wisconsin), and a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics (University of Michigan). Lives in Allendale, MI with his wife Kim and dog Gladys. Enjoys long-distance running, pruning his own apple trees, and watching movies with his wife.  Has volunteered on a church resettlement committee to integrate refugee families from Iraq.  Is sponsoring (along with his wife) a high school student in Nepal. Received the 2015 Building Bridges Award from the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Has given a number of radio interviews, public presentations, and even a sermon on ethnocentrism and its insidious presence in all our lives. Produces, with his wife, a Michigan talk show called Feel Like You Belong, a TV program about immigrants and making a new life in the United States (www.FeelLikeYouBelong.com).  Is active in racial justice issues, partly through the Institutes of Healing Racism. Has two daughters, a physician in Ann Arbor, MI, and a hospital chaplain in Long Beach, CA. Is grandfather to two boys and one girl, whom he is now teaching to put interesting sounds into their mouths.
